Create a Snapchat Sticker Pack—Winners Get to Tour Snapchat

3/14/2019

In the Snapchat app, users can add expression to their Snaps and Chats with "stickers," which are drawings and cartoons designed by Team Snapchat. The 20 student winners get to head to Snap’s Santa Monica headquarters to receive design advice directly from Snap employees. Snap has created this opportunity to engage students' creativity, but more importantly, Snap is also investing in teaching students the skills that are necessary to get hired at their company and other tech companies throughout out Los Angeles. By having your students participate in this opportunity, they are applying skills they have been taught in class to real world applications that are worthy of being put on a resume.

Below are the details of the ‘Best Friends’ Sticker Pack Challenge:

Snap and Bixel Exchange have developed a fun, creative competition to provide students with an opportunity to create their own Snap stickers as part of the 'Best Friends’ Sticker Pack Challenge. The challenge itself consists of the student submitting 3 of their own Snap sticker designs that will then be judged according to a set of voting criteria. Snap will choose 20 winners to visit Snap HQ in Venice to work with Snap designers 1:1 on their design skills.

‘Best Friends’ Sticker Pack Challenge flyer with official rules can be found here: http://bit.ly/bixelsnapsticker2019

Today is the launch of the ‘Best Friends’ Sticker Pack Challenge. Below are a few key details about the challenge:
o Eligible to high school and community college students in the LA County area
o Students must email their final 3 Snap designs and the signed official rules agreement to snapchallenge@lachamber.com by May 5th
o All submissions must be received by Friday, April 12th
o 20 students will be selected based upon the voting criteria by Wednesday, May 1st (full voting criteria here)
o Once permission slips are completed and received by the students and their guardians, the 20 high school winners will visit Snap HQ for a 1:1 workshop with Snap designers on Wednesday, May 29th
Below are a few reference links to learn about Snap and how to use Stickers:
o How to create and send Snaps - https://support.snapchat.com/en-US/a/create
o How to add stickers to Snaps - https://support.snapchat.com/en-US/a/add-stickers?as=sticker

This is a challenge that students can either do independently or that educators can have their entire class participate in (however, keep in mind that submissions will be accepted on an individual basis only; no group submissions accepted). We need you to send this out to all of your students for them to participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity. However, we encourage you to also implement this into your curriculum to give students the class time and support to develop and design their ideas. Below are a few ways:
o 2 class sessions
§  1 hour brainstorm session: ideation of a minimum of 5 stickers that represent 'Best Friends’ Sticker Pack
§  1 hour class session: students design top 3 Snap sticker ideas (previous knowledge of Photoshop or Illustrator) — stickers can continue to be worked on at home or during other class sessions if time allows
o Requirements
§  Access to computers with Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator

11th Graders at Da Vinci Design Kick-off Architecture Project with Workplace Tours

3/28/2017

Da Vinci Design’s architecture pathway is in full swing. 135 Art & Design students travelled to multiple locations on Friday to check out client-centered, intentionally designed work spaces. Tours to Gensler Architecture, Phyn, and 72andSunny inspired students as they embark on their intentional design project.

“Each space we visited led us on a tour and explained how the specific needs of the office workers impacted all aspects of the design - from the way people could move through the space to collaborate on projects down to the lighting fixtures” said Art & Design 3 teacher, Eimile Gavagan, who organized this event and project.

The purpose of the project is for students to design a space with client needs in mind. Gensler, who designed the new school building, has donated old Requests For Proposals (RFPs) in order for students to design something rooted in the real-world.  One of the RFPs is for a high school just a little bit smaller than the new Wiseburn/DaVinci school.  Later this month, students will design spaces and Gensler will consult with students along the way.

“The students had an amazing time touring all the creative spaces at 72andSunny and learning about the process behind redesigning this historic building” said Jen Hou, 11th grade English teacher. Students who toured 72andSunny were in awe of the creative culture, open workspaces and the fact that employees can bring their dogs to work!

Students also visited Phyn, a joint venture with Belkin International that provides an intelligent water solution to protect homes from leak damage, enable mindful conservation, and enhance household water usage. Phyn’s offices are still under construction, so students could see the design process in action.   CEO Ryan Kim spoke about the architectural process from selecting a space to building it out to flexible furniture selection.

At Gensler’s brand-new space downtown, student tours were led in part by Da Vinci Extension (DVX) intern Casey Van Houten, who is currently completing a 12 week paid internship with Gensler.  With over 600 employees and a specialty in architecture, Gensler taught students about the interdisciplinary nature of design and how to incorporate client needs.

Headspace Meditation App Hosts Da Vinci Design Teachers

Headspace, the influential mindfulness app based in Santa Monica, hosted all of  Da Vinci Design's teachers in January.  Teachers toured the open air office space at Bergamot station and learned about the intentional design that went into its creation.  Melissa Mock, one of Headspace's recruiters, also spoke with teachers about what they are looking for in new hires and gaps she sees in candidates.

Design teachers joined the entire Headspace team at 10am for "10 at 10", their office-wide 10 minute meditation.   Teachers also explored the meditation pods and phone booths (for private conference calls) while generating new ideas to bring back to students.

In the afternoon, teachers broke out into conference rooms - including one with a swings! - to plan their projects for the upcoming semester.  "The space was so inspiring as we were planning our projects.  It was fun to see the new type of office space and careers!" shared one Design teacher.

Da Vinci Extension Students Learn From The Best At Onsite Boot Camps

Deutsch advertising agency and Kinecta Federal Credit Union recently hosted boot camps for Da Vinci Extension (DVX) students who are beginning paid internships as part of their college and career-ready curriculum. The boot camps, held at our partners’ workplaces, were designed to prepare students for a real-world work environment.

At Deutsch, the Director of Communications, Director of Design, Director, of Creative, and Director of Accounts offered tips about networking and making a good first impression.  Topics such as “how to be professional in an unprofessional environment”, “making connections, not friendships”, and “how to craft a personal elevator pitch” were covered.  Arianna Cooke, a 13th year DVX student now interning at 72andSunny, shared that it was “nice to know that not everyone (at 72andSunny) knew what they wanted to do in life and went on a path to search for something that matched their interests.”  DVX 13th year student Jacob Victorica shared that he appreciated “how the employees gave real insight about their industry and past work experiences. The Design Director’s perspective was interesting because of how he got to the position he is in by just connecting with other people.”

At Kinecta Federal Credit Union, students learned concrete financial literacy skills needed such as how to complete the first-day forms necessary to get hired, how to calculate taxes and exemptions, utilize credit responsibly, and basic budgeting.  Students heard great advice from Kinecta employees in the areas of HR, Credit and Collections, Innovation and Application Delivery, and Community Relations.

Da Vinci Industry Partners Lend Real World Lens at ‘Project Pitch Panel’ Day

Da Vinci Schools recently welcomed industry professionals from Belkin, Gensler, Microsoft, Kinecta Federal Credit Union, and 72andSunny to offer feedback on teachers’ upcoming projects as part of a “Project Pitch Panel” day. Da Vinci relies on its industry partners to help define the knowledge and skill sets students need to know for future jobs.

More than 100 teachers from four Da Vinci schools shared their project ideas to teams of industry professionals. The partners listened attentively, then provided feedback and suggestions for software and other resources to make the projects more real world and relevant to the their professional workplaces.  An 11th grade Da Vinci Design teacher shared that she loved having someone from Gensler to bounce ideas off. “The Gensler team was very collaborative.  It is essential for us to make these connections for students in our architecture pathway.”

A few notable connections arose following the event:  Gensler, 72andSunny, and Belkin will be hosting tours of their facilities to kick off the 11th grade Da Vinci Design project on intentional architectural design. Gensler will be sharing client Requests for Proposals (RFPs) so that students can design spaces for real architecture projects, and consulting with students along the way. Belkin International’s marketing team will be collaborating with students in Da Vinci Communications’ strategic communications pathway to create a marketing plan for existing Belkin projects.
